Your NYC Neighbor: Sharon Jackson

We also love to grab tips and recommendations from moms and dads in certain neighborhoods and throughout the 5 Boroughs, and especially people who have created a product, service or site that helps new parents or appeals to children. Meet Sharon Jackson a Nutrition and Fitness Expert.

 

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I was born in Munich, Germany and moved to Brooklyn when I was about four.  My father was studying medicine and my mother opera. Having one parent involved in medicine and the other in the arts definitely influenced my interests later on. Growing up in Brooklyn, I was fortunate to live in neighborhoods that were very diverse. I feel that helped me to adapt and get along easily with many different cultures that I was exposed to in and outside of school. Plus, just life in general, as we’ll find ourselves in new situations and have to adapt socially, emotionally and psychologically.

 

I ventured out of Brooklyn when I was accepted into the High School of Performing Arts in Manhattan where I studied dance. As a child, I loved to dance and my mother put me in dance classes to encourage my interest. When I found out about an arts high school, I had asked my dance teacher to help me choreograph a routine for the auditions. I’ll never forget that day. I had the flu and I went to the audition sick and gave it my all. I was accepted and spent four years in a conservatory like environment that also had academics. It was a tough school and the dance teachers were hard on everyone as they wanted you to know this is a taste of what it’ll be like when you’re out there in the real world of entertainment. As an adolescent, that’s a hard pill to swallow. I loved performing but I actually couldn’t wait to graduate and go to college to leave that world of pressure behind me.

 

I attended Hofstra University where I was a theater major in my freshman year but then changed it to a B.S. in Exercise Science. I wanted to study something that would give me a more practical career. I still continued to perform in shows at school to keep my creativity flowing.  It made sense after coming from a world of dance and movement to study physiology. This degree allowed me to work in corporate fitness for major financial institutions like Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Prudential and American Express as an Exercise Specialist. Corporate America is quite conservative and my artsy background instilled in me this free spirited attitude of wanting to be my own boss. So I ventured  off on my own as a freelance fitness trainer creating “Trainer’s Edge Fitness.”  During the early part of my career, I competed in the Reebok National Aerobics Dance Competition and won second place, I also did competitive body building and came in first place in my weight class. Fun experiences and very rewarding.

 

How did you get into fitness?

Along the way, I studied health supportive cooking at the Natural Gourmet Institute in NYC, started a small personal chef business and cooked for my fitness clients, got certified in Yoga at the Himalayan Yoga Institute, and received my Pilates certification through the Physical Mind Institute. My husband is studying nutrition and over the last year and half from all his studies, we’ve been following a Paleo way of eating which has had major improvements on our health. I used to suffer from dermatitis on my face which gave me embarrassing red rashes and dry flakes around the side of my face. I don’t have it anymore. My husband got himself off of anti-depressants as he learned you’re body is not deficient in Lexipro or Klonipan. You have to dig deep and look at the underlying cause. There are things you can do to increase low levels of serotonin and dopamine which are typically low in people with depression. Food and supplementation is a healthier way to go with no side effects. I feel like all the experiences I’ve had in health and fitness make me well rounded, so I can offer a lot to any type of client from fitness to helping someone make dietary changes.

 

What NYC neighborhood do you live in? 

I currently live in Battery Park, NYC. There are many things to love about this neighborhood. It’s like it’s own little world with everything you need. There’s a sense of community with great schools for children, a variety of excellent restaurants, the close proximity to Jersey City with the path train, beautiful parks right on the water. The Battery Park conservancy is amazing with the offerings for young children all year round from the free summer activities like “Art in the Park” to “Water play for very young children.” You walk out your door in the summer and there’s lots of people to meet and make friends with.

 

What’s next or new for you?

I have website I’m putting together called www.dynamichealthandwellness.com and I want to create a resource for visitors where they can learn about alternative health care practices for themselves and their families, find recipes that support a grain/gluten free and whole foods lifestyle, offer affiliate products that I support and use because they’re non-toxic, safe for the planet, the environment and for humans. I’m also a writer and in my second year of a screenwriting program.
