Your Baby and Cellphones

By Harry Gardiner of Wavewall

Cell Phones: One day in 1973, we quickly accepted these incredible devices that permanently changed the way we communicate in today’s world, but since then have been asking too few questions.

Did you know that the amount of cell phone subscriptions in the world today almost exceeds the human population? The telecommunications industry has almost 100% market share. In America, about 20 million children under 14 own a cell phone. 33% of 8-10 year-olds, 69% of 11-14 year-olds, and 85% of 14-17 year-olds own cell phones.

You would think that such a massive industry (that sells to basically everyone on the planet) is closely regulated for safety–you would not think twice that there are quality regulations in place that protect you and your children from any kind of harmful effects of cell phones.

Well, here is some news for you.

The current cell phone radiation testing model required by the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is designed after a 220lb (100kg), 6’2” (1.88m) adult male, 11lb (5kg) head that was chosen in the ‘80s and has not changed since. This model not only does not account for the effects of mobile radiation on more than half of the population, but also grossly underestimates these effects on children.

Children absorb 10 times the amount of radiation of adults.

Om P. Ghandi, a professor from University of Utah, says that this is due to thinner skulls made of soft bone marrow of their still-developing bodies that accounts for this higher absorption rate.

Not only does the radiation testing model poorly represent most of the population and especially children, but warnings for mobile radiation are hidden in tiny print in your cell phone manuals that state that you should keep your phone at least 15mm (5/8 inch) away from your body at all times. If you do not do so, these warnings state that the radiation levels being absorbed into your body can exceed the legal limits.

It is not a coincidence that you have not seen very many studies published about the negative effects of mobile radiation. Many studies conducted state that it takes years for the side effects to show (whether it be cancer, infertility, or other health concerns) and this is the reason that there are so few studies available on the matter. The truth is that sometimes it can take more than 20 years to be able to discover the long-term effects of using these devices 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as we do today. If your children are exposed to cell phones while young, there is a great chance that they will have the opportunity to experience these effects firsthand as they grow older.

The testing model for radiation is outdated and underestimates radiation absorption of mostly everyone, but even more for children. Warnings are hidden. There is no education available on the topic. There is little research available. Why isn’t anyone asking more questions?
